Happy Compassion Week 11!
Â
Welcome to this year-long series in 2020 on being more compassionate to yourself and others (because we need that right now, don’t we?)
Â
Find out why I’m doing this compassion series in Week One, and access the rest of the series at the bottom of this post.
This week’s quote is attributed to Carl Jung, a well-known psychiatrist:
“What you resist, persists.”
Man, I can’t think of a better time for this quote. We are in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, and people are feeling some pretty intense fear.
How do you deal with fear? Do you attempt to assuage it with alcohol? Food? Buying all the TP? What if you were to just sit with the fear feelings?
You’ve probably heard this quote before, right? It means, the more you deny or avoid something, it sticks around until you notice it. And if you’re someone who either ignores or tries incessantly to make hard feelings go away, you’re not alone. Watch the video to learn how you can make hard stuff go away faster by virtue of allowing it to be there.
As always, the video has a TON more information about the quote in a short few-minute vlog. Here is the practice for this week [adapted]:
Embracing Experience
- Catch yourself noticing when you wish you were feeling differently than you are.
- Ask yourself, “What am I resisting here?”
- Then allow the uncomfortable feelings to be there, and breathe slowly.
- Watch the feelings go away on their own (likely because you paid attention to them).
Hoping you feel more peaceful and more compassionate toward yourself and others after this week’s exercise. I’ll see you next week!
Be well,
-M
